I have been trying in vain to write a blog post dealing with the topic of Random Acts of Kindness, since we have just moved out of ‘Random Acts of Kindness Week.’
I have been experiencing some writer’s block on this topic, because I don’t want to sound preachy. We all know what we can do to enhance someone else’s life. To “pay it forward.” Simple little things that I shouldn’t have to tell you about, nor remind myself about, yet here I am doing just that!
We all inherently know when we are being kind and when we are not. Yet, I will say, that even the simplest act – holding a door open, letting another car cut in while in traffic, paying a compliment, giving our time and money to charities, picking up garbage by the side of the road (that’s being kind to the earth), feeding a feral cat – can mean the world to someone or something. More than you know…
Sitting here looking out at the fading light in the February sky, I can’t help but think of the passage of time and how to make the most of it. Digressing now…
At 60 years of age (don’t know how that happened!!), I can look back at my life and realize that I didn’t make the most of what I was experiencing in those “moments”. I thought that my 20s, 30s, 40s and even – gasp! – 50s would last forever and that experiences and time spent with loved ones would never end…BUT harsh reality. They do. Things change, people leave, time passes. And had I had a better appreciation of what I had heard multiple times and now firmly believe is the key to happiness…LIVE IN THE MOMENT – I would not have wasted so much time being anxious and worried and harried and ridiculously dramatic.
I know it sounds trite but I would have better appreciated the people and places and events in which I was participating, and revelled in the beauty of sunsets and beaches, and weddings and parties and the precious time spent with family, and enjoying my work life.
I reflect on those times and miss them tremendously and wish that I could turn back the clock. I would even go back to my high school days! Those turbulent, angst ridden years…but I would take them all back and dive into them and swim in them until my hands got all pruney. (I have to give credit to a movie for that line…love it!).
So, this blog post is about LIVING IN THE MOMENT! Every moment. The good, the bad, and the ugly. There is something to learn from EVERY experience, however joyful or painful.
So...laugh with your friends, kiss your kids, cuddle with your pets, be kind to your neighbours and work colleagues, and embrace all races, religions, and orientations. We are all of this earth and this time and we all have something to teach one another.
Spread kindness wherever you go – even before that first cup of coffee:). Oh dear…I guess the kindness factor worked its way into this post.
Thanks for reading…and being kind.
